It is always a challenge to get a group of people to work together on a task: especially when they are ‘butting heads’ over who’s in charge, and tempers flare! I’ve seen this at home and in the workplace, at schools, and yes, even at church. Working together can be hard work!
James was writing to Christians who were throughout the Roman Empire, and they were just trying to make a living, all the while forming new churches wherever they went. It was an important time in the early church, and the faithful were struggling. There was tension and anxiety, times were hard, and people got angry at each other. They fought over who was in charge, who knew best what to do, and even over the details of how they were to “do” church. Part of what James wrote in chapter 1 of his letter was to help them learn to work together.
James taught those early Christians lessons that we still must learn, if our churches are to succeed. Christians must keep their anger (and their tongues), under control, and learn to listen to each other and understand their concerns. Too, the form of worship and how you “do” church is not nearly as important as the ministry Christians do in the name of Jesus. When Christians accept the teachings given in the Word of God, and become “doers” of the faith, the church is strengthened, and the gospel message is heard.
