My first car was an old pickup that I intended to make into a hot-rod; it was awesome! I was going to build a big motor for it and put on loud pipes, lower the front-end, and then put on really wide tires – I was so excited! One day as I was tinkering on this truck with my dad (an old hot-rodder and mechanic himself), I was going on about all the cool stuff I was going to do. I went on non-stop for a long time – finally my dad said, in that exasperated voice I knew so well, “How about we fix the brakes first?” I said ok, and kept talking about all the cool stuff. Finally my dad nearly yelled, in a clearly angry voice, “Why don’t we fix the brakes first, so you don’t crash it the first time you drive it!” I finally stopped talking, and we rebuilt the brakes.
It is easy to focus on what excites or interests you, and ignore what may be more important, isn’t it? We can do that in so many areas of life – cars, marriages, even faith!
One day Jesus was confronted by religious leaders, and they tried to ‘trip him up’ with trick questions; but Jesus was alert to their scheme! Rather than get excited and drawn into an argument, he responded to their questions about important teachings by quoting scripture. To some it all up, what He said was simple: “Love God, and Love people.”
Jesus wasn’t saying the other issues of faith weren’t important; he was making the point that if people of faith didn’t love God, and love people, then their religious ideals didn’t really mean very much at all!
He was right, wasn’t he? Knowing Bible teachings and observing worship is important, to be sure; but if we don’t love God and love people, it’s just words.
Love God, and love people. That’s what God wants you to do!
