What I Learned from a Liar

God calls us to a life of honesty and integrity! This means that we speak the truth, and what we say we believe is supported by our words and actions. This is extremely important to God!

In the early church, there was a practice of selling your possessions and giving the proceeds to the church so that all would have food and clothing. One couple intended to do this but lied about the money they received after selling a piece of property. They gave a generous gift to the church but held back some for their purposes. 

When confronted by the church leaders, they held to their story, and they were both struck dead by God’s power! 

The fact that they held some of the money back for their purposes wasn’t the issue – there was no “requirement” from God that people give all the proceeds from a sale; the fact that they lied, though, both to the church and God, brought God’s judgment on them!

This story is somewhat terrifying and seems to challenge the teachings of the Bible regarding God’s love and forgiveness. The story's point is to teach us that God values the practice of speaking the truth and living by those words. It may not be a big deal to us in this sin-stained world, but it is a crucial element of the Christian life! Let us speak the truth, in all situations, with grace and compassion for others. Honesty really is “the best policy!”
