Old Time Religion... The Cleansing
Sunday Jan 19, 2020
Sunday Jan 19, 2020
Interestingly, the sort of thing that has been preached for centuries by ministers of the Gospel – lives changed by Jesus is a powerful, yet ‘normal’ story for those who are in the faith! The message of Jesus is the same today as it has been since his birth – it is the message of the Gospel, the ‘good news’ of Jesus.
If you could go back in time and listen to an ‘old time’ gospel message, here is an idea of what you might hear:
- The Gospel is God’s way of saving and changing human lives
- Sin destroys life, and brings suffering and isolation from God
- We are saved by the simple act of professing Jesus as Savior and Lord
- We are saved by the simple act of professing Jesus as Savior and Lord
- The cleansing of Jesus is for all who will follow Him
God loves everyone; Jesus died for everyone; and the Gospel is the power of God for salvation – for everyone!

Old School Religion... The Book
Sunday Jan 12, 2020
Sunday Jan 12, 2020
We always need direction, don’t we?
God knows we need help in this life – all of us! And because He loves us, He wants to help so God gives us guidance in the important areas of our lives. Today we'll discuss a couple of areas where God helps us:
-
Our faith is a “revealed” faith
-
God’s written word is His way of providing instruction and leadership
God’s Word “cuts through” the nonsense and crazy thinking we pick up in this world – and can guide us into truth, and life. The author of Hebrews said it like this: “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)

Old Time Religion... The Love
Tuesday Jan 07, 2020
Tuesday Jan 07, 2020
Today we begin a series talking about that “Old Time Religion.” And we begin by talking about the very foundation of that good and wholesome faith – God’s love.
Our text comes from I John 4:7-16
You will hear how Eternal and transforming love is God’s defining characteristic and God’s love is a transforming power in the lives of His people.
“Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. Love does not demand its own way. Love is not irritable, and it keeps no record of what has been wronged. It is never glad about injustice, but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” (I Corinthians 13:4-7)

What do I want for Christmas...I want a good now, and forever
Sunday Dec 29, 2019
Sunday Dec 29, 2019
The Christmas story addresses the most profound problems of humanity. This is the final part of the series asking the question, “What do you want for Christmas?” The answer for today and addressed by Jesus’ birth is very simple: “I want to have a good now, and forever.”
How can the birth of Jesus, so long ago, affect our desire for a good life both now, and into eternity? Our text can help: Luke 1:26-37
Today we'll talk about:
- Jesus birth shows us that God’s power is at work on earth
- Jesus’ birth gives us insight into God’s eternal plans for us
God is at work – both now, and in the hereafter!
“For our perishable earthly bodies must be transformed into heavenly bodies that will never die. When this happens – when our perishable earthly bodies have been transformed into heavenly bodies that will never die – then at last the scriptures will come true: “Death is swallowed up in victory. . . How we thank God, who gives us victory over sin and death through Jesus Christ our Lord!’ (I Corinthians 15:53-4, 57)

13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

What I want for Christmas... I want everyone to get along
Friday Dec 20, 2019
Friday Dec 20, 2019
Wouldn’t it be great if we all could get along? I don’t mean just “not hit others,” I mean truly get along: accept each other, disagree agreeably, and care for each other regardless of the differences. Our best efforts tend to fail; it seems like it might take an ‘act of God’ for it to happen!
Surprisingly, God has acted to bring this about! If you were asked what you wanted for Christmas, and you said, “I just want everyone to get along,” it might interest you to know that is one of the things God intended to bring about through the Christmas story:
Our scripture comes from Luke 2:8-15
“Peace on earth” What does this mean? What can it mean, if we take the story of Jesus seriously? The “Peace” Christ can bring real joy to our lives:
- Forgiveness for one’s sins and failures, and the ability to move on.
- Self-Control
- Inner calm
One other thing – there is also a purely spiritual dimension of God’s peace – and that is the peace we can have with God himself!

What I want for Christmas... I want to know that God is with Me
Monday Dec 09, 2019
Monday Dec 09, 2019
It’s good being loved, and connecting with those that love us. Most of us want and need this; without those connections, we feel alone and isolated, even incomplete. That need for connection also extends to our relationship with God. Humans need to feel like God loves them and is with them – that’s the purpose of almost all religious practices and beliefs!
In our passage we can see the ways in which God met this need for a connection with Him through the birth of His Son, Jesus: Matthew 1:18-25
This group of Christmas sermons is based on a series of statements, “What I want for Christmas.” If one of the things you wanted for Christmas was to know God is with you, here are a couple of ways Jesus’ birth can bring us what we want:
- The birth of Jesus is the story of God’s coming down to us
- The birth of Jesus is an offer of His presence in our lives
Jesus promised his followers, “I am with you always, even unto the ends of the earth.” He was talking about the Holy Spirit within them! The apostle Paul explained it like this: “Since Christ lives within you, even though your body will die because of sin, your spirit is alive because you have been made right with God. The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as he raised Christ from the dead, he will give life to your mortal body by this same Spirit living with you.”
(Romans 8:10-11)

A Thankful Life
Tuesday Nov 26, 2019
Tuesday Nov 26, 2019
Turkey Day – Yeah! We are thankful; but Not everyone is thankful:
My wife tells the story of dealing with an ungrateful parent at the local high school, where she worked as counselor’s secretary. There was a program for helping needy families for the holidays, and all were given a turkey – large and frozen. The woman was angry, as she wanted the meal prepared for her – not a “blankety-blank frozen bird!” To add insult to injury after school that day my wife and the school counselor were standing outside in the parking lot, and the woman came by sitting in the passenger seat of her car, her son driving, and she yelled at them and through the frozen bird out of the window at them! No spirit of thanksgiving in that family!
All kidding aside, a day set aside to honor God, and count our blessings, and “be thankful” to The One who has given us so much, is a very good thing!
Being thankful can change our life!
- A thankful life can help us develop a healthy focus on Jesus’ work.
-
A thankful life leads to a humble dependence upon God.
We hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving. Please join us this Sunday for a special Hanging of the Greens Service where we decorate our sanctuary to prepare for the Christmas season. Service starts at 10:30 at 500 West Truman Road, Independence MO
